Blog # 5: 'The Invisible Umbilicus': The Ether and Avesta’s Comms

In the study of Avestan history, one cannot ignore the most pervasive and yet most ethereal infrastructure ever devised by human ingenuity. If the Eilo Archipelago is the physical cradle of our species, there can be no doubt that the Ether is its nervous system. To the cultivator and their Seedling, the Ether is as fundamental as the air they breathe or the QuitoPaste they first rely on; yet, as an Avestan historian, one must look past its utility to its origins: a story of quantum defiance and indeed the possible bending of the very fabric of reality.

The Micius Inheritance: From Tibet to Dezima

The pre-history of the Ether begins not on Avesta, but in the final, desperate centuries of Earth. Long before the exodus, in the year 2017 of the Old Era, a satellite named Micius, named after an ancient Terran philosopher, was launched into the sky above the Gobi Desert. It was here that researchers first achieved what was then considered a miracle: the teleportation of a photon from the ground to a satellite in orbit. New Live Ventures were soon to swoop in and snap this tech up.

This experiment proved that quantum states could be transferred without physical travel. Through entanglement, two particles could share a single existence regardless of the distance between them. Measurement on one immediately influenced the other. This "spooky action," as the ancients called it, became the cornerstone of Frontiers Engineering’s greatest achievement: the Ether.

When Seed Industries launched Project Dezima, they didn’t just send a space station out from the Solar System: they sent a massive, entangled quantum node. The Ether we use today is the descendant of that first satellite-to-ground link. It is a "Global-Scale Quantum Internet" that does not rely on cables or atmospheric signals, but on the instantaneous synchronization of subatomic states across the Tau Ceti system.

Bending Space-Time: The New Life Ventures Rumour

There is a persistent debate among Avestan scholars regarding the latency of the Ether. Because entanglement is instantaneous, some argue the Ether effectively bends space-time, creating a bridge between Avesta and the distant memories of the Earth-side servers.

Rumours have long swirled around New Life Ventures, one of the enigmatic early backers of Klang (the original architects of covitalism). Historical fragments suggest that New Life Ventures pushed for an "Ultra-Long Distance Uplink" that would allow for the teleportation of not just data, but complex biological blueprints. Is the Ether merely a communication tool, or is it a tether to a version of Earth that still exists in a quantum "elsewhere"? Seed Industries remains characteristically silent on the matter, referring only to the Ether’s "unfailing fidelity."

Covitalism: The Body as a Node

Every Seedling is born with a subdermal implant that acts as a localized quantum receiver. This implant ensures that the Seedling is never truly alone - if it so wishes. It monitors cellular health, synchronizes memories with the Dezima archives, and allows for the seamless interaction with Cultivators. Perhaps most interestingly for us,, the Ether is the medium through which the Cultivators, those distant observers on the "Old Earth", interact with Avesta. Through the entangled link, a Cultivator’s intent is teleported across the vacuum, influencing the development of societies in the Eilo Archipelago.

To some Seedlings, the Ether is an almost numinous presence: invisible, instantaneous, and all-knowing. What has been termed Providence by some. To the Avestan historian, it is a reminder that we are still, in many ways, tethered to the ground stations of our ancestors, living our lives through a 1,400km uplink that has in fact its origins across the stars.
